It’s been several years since we last saw the legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. As we prepare for the limited Original series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to start streaming on Disney+ later this month, we’ve put together a list of some of Obi-Wan’s most memorable moments to re-visit before May 27.
Spoiler alert! If you've spent years trapped in a containment field you may have missed some of these epic Obi-Wan Kenobi moments.
Duel of the Fates (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace)
Starting the prequel trilogy off with a bang, who can forget the lightsaber duel between Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi Apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi and Sith Apprentice Darth Maul during the Invasion of Naboo? Forced to watch as Maul kills Qui-Gon Jinn with his double-bladed lightsaber, Obi-Wan retaliates against the Sith but loses ground when he is knocked into a nearby shaft. Always thinking on his feet, Obi-Wan manages to use his Master’s lightsaber to avenge Qui-Gon by cutting Maul in half, sending his body tumbling down the shaft.
Discovery of the Clone Army (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones)
Prompted to journey to Kamino by fan favourite Dex, Obi-Wan Kenobi travels to the planet to discover another favourite, bounty hunter Jango Fett. Obi-Wan learns that Jango is the original genetic template for the clone army and spooks the bounty hunter into fleeing. Obi-Wan attempts to stop Jango and his son, Boba, from escaping but is beaten in battle and watches on as the bounty hunter’s ship takes off.
Darth Maul’s Return and Duchess Satine’s Death (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
Many of Obi-Wan’s memorable moments do not end happily. Believed to have been killed on Naboo, Darth Maul actually survived the fall. Motivated by revenge towards his nemesis, Obi-Wan, he takes over Mandalore to lure the Jedi Knight to the planet and soon captures him. Realising Obi-Wan’s feelings for Duchess Satine, the deposed leader of Mandalore, Maul executes her in front of the Jedi, in what is one of the most emotional moments from the series.
Duel on Mustafar (Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith)
The moment in which everyone learnt the importance of the high ground. With Anakin having succumbed to the dark side, Obi-Wan vows to stop his apprentice at all costs as they both face off on the fiery planet of Mustafar. The ferocious lightsaber battle between the two ends on the lava embankment where Obi-Wan cuts down Anakin as he attempts to jump toward him. In perhaps the ultimate of Obi-Wan’s heartbreaking confrontations, the Jedi Master is forced to watch as hate and fire consume his former Padawan.
Out of Exile (Star Wars: A New Hope)
The first time we were introduced to the iconic Obi-Wan was as an old man in exile. Having found refuge on Tatooine, Obi-Wan is discovered by Luke Skywalker following a message from Princess Leia. This sets in motion the series of events which make up the most beloved trilogy of all time. Obi-Wan truly was our only hope.
