CAPITOL THEATRE

13 Campbell Street, Haymarket

Phone 02 9320 5000 Fax 02 9212 6014

The oldest theatre building in NSW, the Capitol has more than a century of performances to its credit. It features design and decoration dating from 1892-93, retained from its earlier incarnations as the New Belmore Market building, a circus Hippodrome (complete with hydraulic seal pit) and a lavishly adorned '20s picture palace.

Much of the overblown statuary and decorations date back to its 1928 conversion to an "atmospheric" theatre, with an interior intended to create the illusion of sitting in a romantic courtyard under a brilliant night sky.

In the early '90s the Capitol was completely renovated at a cost of $35 million, re-opening in 1995. The refurbished auditorium has a capacity of between 1,500 and 2,070 people, and its orchestra pit is the largest in the country. The original market facade has been retained, though its original 36 street-level arches have been partially rebuilt.

The bewitching lighting and those old-school sound effects have been recreated using the latest technology, including more than 1,000 fibre-optic stars to represent the southern winter sky at midnight, mapped from the Sydney Observatory star map. Decoration and statuary, albeit less lavish than that gracing the opulent State Theatre, abound. The new bars and expanded foyer have been given a (comparatively restrained) re-fit, but merge quite nicely with the original decor.

Since the big re-vamp, the Capitol has hosted concerts by famous international artists as well as musical productions, ballet and opera, and is routinely used for Sydney Festival shows.
